University Malaya Launched its Annual UM Deep Tech Accelerator!
University Malaya via the Universiti Malaya Centre of Innovation and Enterprise (UMCIE) launched its UM Deep Tech (UMDT) Startup Accelerator Program 3.0 on July 5th, 2023. This event is an inspiring and informative session that shed light on the groundbreaking technologies and innovations developed by university startups and their impact on shaping the future of our economy.
The ceremony was held at the Auditorium, Level 1, Research Management & Innovation Complex, UM from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. Attendees had a chance to engage with renowned speakers, gain valuable insights, network with like-minded individuals, and explore collaboration opportunities in the deep tech ecosystem. The fusion of academia and entrepreneurship was celebrated, highlighting the critical role of university startups in building a prosperous future.
UMCIE partnered with Yayasan Bank Rakyat to kick off UMDT 3.0. This accelerator is also supported by Origgin, Youth Ventures Asia, ReSkills, and AWS who recognize the significance of innovation and entrepreneurship within the academic ecosystem. The program launch was officiated by the Chairman of Yayasan Bank Rakyat, Datuk Philip Benedict Lasimbang, who expressed his honor in partnering with one of the top universities globally, Universiti Malaya.
During the event, Prof. Dr. Ivy Chung, Director of UM Centre of Innovation and Enterprise (UMCIE), provided insights and remarks on the successes of the first and second cohorts of the accelerator, highlighting the positive outcomes achieved by previous participants.
The session continues with a forum session titled "Powering Future Economy Growth With University Deep Tech Startups" moderated by Ahmad Zakir Ja’afar, Senior Innovation Catalyst, TNB Commercialisation & Entrepreneur In Residence at UM. Distinguished panelists including Clarence Tan from Origgin Ventures Pte Ltd, Madhu Nambiar, co-founder and CEO of Uniresearch&Innovation Sdn Bhd (UMDT 1.0), Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Lai Khin Wee, the founder and CTO of Biosight Sdn Bhd (UMDT 1.0), and Dr. Afnizanfaizal Abdullah, General Manager of the Ecosystem Development Division at MRANTI, have shared their expertise and insights on the potential of deep tech startups in driving future economic growth.
Each startup participating in the accelerator program will receive a grant of RM50,000, distributed by Origgin Ventures, and will have the opportunity to secure further investment of up to RM300,000.
